At Graphitehq

Graphite is a boutique digital marketing firm that builds scalable growth engines for consumer technology companies such as Ticketmaster, MasterClass, BetterUp, and Honey. We specialize in search engine optimization (SEO), content strategy, mobile app growth, and conversion optimization. We are a fully distributed team that is dedicated to creating an environment where you do the best work of your career. With headquarters in San Francisco and team members across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, we are ready to welcome our next team member!

Reporting directly to the CFO, you will be the leader across the accounting team responsible for full-cycle accounting systems. You will interact with all departments to report the financial picture that represents the company's activities. Your partnership with internal team members and external sources is a valued contribution to the success of Graphite. This is a fully remote work opportunity.

As the Controller, your responsibilities include:

  • Lead and develop a remote team responsible for the preparation of accurate and current company financial records, along with management of all accounting functions, including AR/AP/Payroll

  • Prepare the monthly & YE close, through to draft financials, for final review with CFO

  • Own the consolidations of financial reporting for the multi-currency entities and partner with the Finance team for scenario planning, reporting, variance analyses, etc.

  • Working with outside tax professionals, prepare income tax returns for the US and multi-state filings

  • Develop and administer accounting policies and implement best practices in accounting processes and workflows

  • Run the procurement process & manage the contracting process (with customers, partners, and vendors)

  • Research and advise on the next best accounting tool for company records, then implement the tools necessary for company accounting needs.

  • Analyze business risks and opportunities, and make recommendations as they affect the financial results of the business

What you should have:

  • Work experience: You’ve been in a senior leadership role for at least 5 years and you are the expert in applying US GAAP to full-cycle accounting systems. You’ve participated in finance activity in FP&A, building and maintaining financial models and you understand the strategy behind the model

  • Industry experience: This one is critical: you have worked in SaaS or Tech Startup companies

  • Education: Accounting degree; nice to have a CPA license or equivalent work experience

  • Technical Experience: You’ll be the subject matter expert, so you need to have the experience to own fully cycle accounting including consolidating parent/subsidiary financials, and multi-currency reports

  • Career Experience: You’ve been hands-on with financial and accounting systems and automation tools including Adaptive Insights, QBO, Expensify, Slack, Notion, GSuite, MSFT Office, and NetSuite ERP. You can, without reservation, continue to be an active participant in the day-to-day operations of finance and accounting

  • Exceptional leadership and management skills: You know how to build and motivate teams; you can mentor direct reports and team members new to the finance and accounting world

  • Soft Skills: You can:
    • comfortably present technical information to a broad audience

    • multi-task efficiently in a deadline-driven environment, navigate through ambiguity, show initiative, and understand that things can change rapidly in an early-stage, rapid-growth company

    • articulate solutions and the problems they are solving across all levels, and layers, internally and externally, throughout a remote organization

    • check your ego at the door

    • maintain a strong work ethic with a drive to get things done

    • be mission-driven and passionate about the customer (internal and external)

  • Compensation - We want to work with the best people in the World and compensate accordingly

  • Vacation & Time Off - To be the best version of yourself, you need time to recharge. We offer flexible PTO. Take time when you need it
